While St. Thomas is world-renowned for its duty-free shopping, the shopping on St. John is also world-class, without the hustle and bustle. Small eclectic shops feature objet d’art, jewelry, and clothing from around the world. There are numerous galleries and practicing artists on the island. The low-key approach belies the level of sophistication you will find.

Be sure to spend some time at Mongoose Junction, not only for its shops, but to see the impressive hand laid stone walls that house them. Wharfside Village is right on the beach in Cruz Bay with jewelry stores, a film processing shop and three restaurant/bars that are on the waterside and have good views of Cruz Bay. There’s also a funky beach bar that often offers live music on the weekends.

Lemon Tree Mall is a cute collection of shops that are anchored by The Lime Inn, a favorite lunch spot for the locals. It is across the street from Fred’s, a true cultural experience. Fred’s has been entertaining the locals with live music on Wednesday and Friday nights for years. If you want to dance and get the feeling of a jumping Caribbean night, be sure to check it out!

The Marketplace is home to Starfish Market, a hardware store, bakery, chocolate/perfume shop, video rental store, and novelty shops. It is open and airy, and has good parking. Starfish Market is St. John's version of a "supermarket."
